The position of employment is based in the Department of Performing Arts. We provide education and conduct research within playwriting/dramaturgy for the dramatic arts, theatre directing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, make-up and wig design, set design, technical theatre and production management for the performing arts. We base our work on tried and tested knowledge in order to develop the various performing arts and attain a high level of artistic and technical skill. This requires a reflective approach that enables our students to help develop the field of performing arts following their graduation.

The Department of Performing Arts together with the Department of Acting and the Department of Film and Media are part of the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Here we provide education and conduct research within film and media, acting and performing arts, and students and researchers also work together in transdisciplinary collaborations.

We are looking for someone with the desire to teach, conduct research, supervise at all levels within Performing Arts. 

As an Assistant Professor, you must have both extensive artistic work experience as well as deep theoretical understanding of your art field. You are expected to engage in and run artistic research work and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes that are part of your teaching.

Your job description includes

  • Cooperating with the department’s teaching staff and head of department to plan teaching and staffing.
  • Active participation in planning the department’s range of freestanding courses alongside the head of department, the department’s programme council, and the Educational Administration Department.
  • Leading the department’s research board and act to create a dynamic research environment within the performing arts.
  • Coordinating doctoral student seminars and departmental duties.
  • Actively participating in developing courses, programmes, and teaching within the Department of Performing Arts in relation to general social developments that are significant to work at the University.
  • Contributing to developing research and education at the department, and work to unite these areas.
  • Overseeing quality assurance of second-cycle courses and programmes, and the departmental duties of doctoral students.
  • Actively working with the department’s study environment.
  • Working with administration, participate in departmental development work and collaborate with both internal Uniarts organisations and external parties.

The position involves a variety of tasks including a significant amount of independent work, in addition to collaborations with colleagues from different management areas and departments. Therefore, there is great personal responsibility for planning and implementing these tasks.

You will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within Uniarts, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments such as study programme or specialisation coordinator, board appointments and be afforded the time and opportunity to pursue artistic research.

In order to be eligibility for the position as an assistant professor in the artistic discipline, you will have demonstrated artistic and teaching expertise within the field of performing arts in its broader sense.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

You should be able to communicate in a Scandinavian language and English, both speaking and in writing.

In addition, you have those personal abilities required to competently fulfil the appointment and to be able to represent the university in a manner beneficial to the organisation.

Assessment criteria

The following factors will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Teaching expertise: demonstrated teaching expertise in an artistic context.
  • Academic or artistic expertise; breadth and depth of specialised knowledge in your artistic field, as well as a good ability to develop and implement artistic research and development work of a high standard.
  • Experience of strategic development work within the field of research and education.
  • Experience of artistic research.
  • Experience of working with both second and third-cycle courses and programmes.
  • Experience of coordinating and developing courses and programmes.
  • Administrative proficiency, at least three years’ experience of administration within higher education and third-cycle courses and programmes.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

You will be employed as an assistant professor based on your background as either an academic or an artist. It is a full-time position. Employment is to start as soon as possible, or by agreement.

If you are applying for the position based on your artistic background, the terms of your employment will be determined by Chapter 4, Section 10 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, i.e., the position will be limited to five years; the position can be renewed. However, the total period of employment when combined may be for a maximum of ten years.

If you are applying based on your academic background, you will be employed permanently in accordance with the Swedish Employment Protection Act following a 6 month probation period.

You are employed as an Assistant Professor in Performing Arts. The assignment as the responsibility of program is independent of the employment and can be terminated with two months' notice by both parties.
