We welcome your application for the position of Professor in Music Drama Performance, specialising in Opera Directing

We are looking for someone with the desire to provide teaching, conduct research and supervision. 

As a professor, you are a leader in your artistic area, the quality of activities is at the highest international level and you have a deep and broad-based knowledge of your artistic area. You are expected to engage in and lead artistic research work and be able to critically reflect on the artistic processes that are part of your teaching.

Your job description includes

  • Leading, driving, and taking responsibility for the development and the music drama performance subject at the department.
  • Managing the department’s strategic development work in collaboration with the head of department.
  • Conducting your own artistic research and improving the department’s research environment and the implementation of this research in first-cycle courses and study programmes.
  • Working on collaborations, both internally within Uniarts and externally with national and international actors.
  • Leading and driving development within the subject field of opera at the department, by, for example, following contemporary trends and developments relevant to the work at the university, and implementing relevant aspects into the teaching.
  • Actively developing Uniarts’ courses and study programmes as well as artistic research, and promoting integration between these fields.

As a Professor you will have an important role in the work of building a common culture of openness and collaboration within Uniarts, as well as in the creation of a good work environment. You may be offered assignments or responsibility for study programmes or specialisations, board appointments.The position includes time for artistic research as agreed.

In order to be eligibility for the post of professor in the artistic discipline you have to demonstrated both artistic and teaching expertise within the field of opera, specialising in directing.

Detailed information regarding qualifications and assessment criteria for teaching appointments is stated in Chapter 4 Sections 3 and 4 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance.

This requires a deep understanding of and extensive experience with opera, both in terms of the stagework of the singer and opera as an interdisciplinary form of art. You must be able to express yourself well in spoken and written English. In addition, you have those personal abilities required to competently fulfil the appointment and to be able to represent the university in a manner beneficial to the organisation.

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria when appointing a professor shall include the degree of proficiency required to be eligible for the position. When appointing a professor, consideration shall also be taken regarding the applicant’s ability to develop, lead, and implement very high quality courses and programmes, artistic research or research, and development work.

The following criteria will be assessed, in this order of priority:

  • Artistic skills – excellence within your artistic field, demonstrated by active artistic practice. The quality of your activities is to be at the highest international level.
  • Deep and broad knowledge of opera direction.
  • Active artistic practice in the field of opera, including both tradition and renewal of the art form.
  • Teaching skills – proven teaching skills in an artistic context within or outside a university context.
  • Wide experience in a variety of teaching and examination forms; the ability to develop, lead and implement education at second and third cycle level.
  • Ability to describe your teaching and your pedagogical approach.
  • Experience of teaching or working in English.
  • Experience of developing international collaboration and outcomes in your artistic area.

You have undergone teaching in higher education training (or expect to do so within the next three years) or in some other documented manner acquired equivalent knowledge.

About the position

The scope of employment is seventy five percent of a full-time position and it is a fixed period of five years, after which the period of the employment must be renewed. However the total period of the employment may not exceed more than ten years. Employment to commence at the earliest date January 2021.
